Scam Alert for East Kentuckians

Word of a new scam making the rounds in eastern Kentucky.

The Rowan county sheriff Matt Sparks says his department has been seeing more people victimized by rip-offs, including recent reports people getting a fake check, supposedly from Publisher’s Clearing House.

The recipients are told to cash it they need top provide personal banking or other information.

Once they do, they find their accounts drained or information compromised.

The sheriff says he understands that it can be easy to fall for scams, but he says you should always think twice about giving information to someone who don’t know or trust…even if they sound legit and convincing.

He says it’s the old saying–if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

His advice–trust your own instincts and that if think you’ve been taken advantage of, there’s no shame in reporting it to the authorities.
