Former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines is trying again to get a different judge for his murder trial.
Stines is charged with murder for the September 2024 shooting death of Letcher District Judge Kevin Mullins at the Court House.
A few weeks before his death, Mullins attended a commission meeting that the Stines case Special Judge Christopher Cohron also attended and video shows them conferring.
Last month Cohron ruled he would not recuse himself because his relationship with Mullins was professional, not personal, and he has no bias.
This week Stines’ attorney filed an affidavit to show more evidence that Cohron’s impartiality could be affected.
The affidavit sends the recusal question to the Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice.
