Kentucky State Police Investigates Fatal Collision in Pike County

ELKHORN CITY, Ky. (May 16, 2024) – Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post received a call at 8:33 a.m. reporting a single vehicle collision had occurred on Kentucky Route 80 in the Elkhorn City community of Pike County. A trooper from Post 9 responded and began the investigation.

The initial investigation indicated Zena Newsome, 17 years old of Elkhorn City, was operating a 2010 Jeep Wrangler on Kentucky Route 80, when Newsome’s vehicle struck an embankment causing it to overturn. Newsome was pronounced deceased on scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office.

Trooper Terry Mounts is investigating the collision and was assisted on scene by Kentucky State Police Post 9 personnel, Elkhorn City Volunteer Fire Department, and Lifeguard Ambulance Service.
